Nehemiah Building The City of God

Around 2,500 years ago, a palace servant called Nehemiah received a report about the city of Jerusalem.  Despite the exile being officially over, the city of Jerusalem was largely in ruins; it’s walls and gates had been left unrepaired for nearly 150 years – anyone could walk through and take possession of their holiest and most precious city.  Most worrying of all, without a restored Jerusalem, the promised Messiah could never appear.  It seemed like all the promises of God and the unique nature of the people of God hung in the balance.

But through prayer, strategy and with God’s help, Nehemiah completed the greatest building project of the age.  He endured opposition, procured support, applied wisdom; leading the people of God to not just rebuild the walls but to take hold of their destiny.
It is both a great story and a great example to the people of God today whose church is often represented as crumbling old walls surrounded by an opposing culture.  We too are called not merely to stand by or merely to weep about our loss; we are called to rebuild the walls and take hold of our destiny to be that city on a hill - a church with strong walls and open gates.
